This Summer: Teach English in Italy PDF Print E-mail
Here's a fun way to get some experience teaching English in Italy while avoiding problems with visas and permits if you aren't a EU citizen. (You need a valid passport, of course)

ACLE is recruiting for English teaching positions in summercamps around Italy. The season runs for twelve weeks starting in June.

ACLE has been established for over twenty-five years and were pioneers in running Theatre in Education programs to be endorsed by the Italian Ministry of Education.

You do not need a teaching or TEFL qualification to work for ACLE (although they are an advantage), so its a perfect first-time experience teaching English to Italian students.  Its also a more casual didactic environment; you won't be spennding time in classrooms or libraries. The program is based on informal teaching methods with drama, games and interactivity at the top of the list. Training is given in a four to five day preparatory camp near San Remo where you can share ideas with tutors, understand the organisation’s vision and teaching methodology.

You will have to arrange your own arrival and departure, including the cost, as they aren't covered by ACLE. You need travel insurance and must also pay for an in-house training/orientation camp before starting  to teach with them. Sometimes, ACLE will drop the orientation camp fee in August if they are in need of extra teachers. After you've begun teaching in the camps, transportation and lodging within Italy will be arrannged and paid by the organization. You will either stay in a hotel or with host families.  This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian culture.

New tutors earn a salary of  220 euros a week for non-residential “City Camps” and 240 a week for residential “Summer Camps”. Returning tutors will earn a bit more; 20 euros more for each program. You are paid upon the completion of your contract, though you can request payments in advance.

What are the requirements?

Candidates must::

 Be a Native English speaker (distinct foreign accents are not acceptable). Enjoy working with children and be energetic, positive, cooperative and extroverted.

Be between the ages of 20 and 30 by June 1st of the year in which you are applying (of note: you may still apply if your age is outside this range) or have completed a minimum of a year at university, college or experienced a gap year.

Have a valid passport. If you are in the process of applying for your passport, you must send in your application followed by a copy of your passport once you have received it. For more information or to apply for a position with ACLE, visit the official website.

UPDATE: Application Deadline for 2009 Summer Camps expired April 15th.
