P.O.N.: Teach English in southern Italy: UPDATES PDF Print E-mail

Teaching English in southern Italy has never been more important, or more rewarded...

Since the introduction of the P.O.N. to six southern Italian regions- Campania (think Naples, Amalfi Coast, Salerno and all of the little towns in between), Basilicata, Calabria, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily-, the search for capable EFL teachers has been ongoing. You need to have some previous experience and a recognized TEFL certification on your resume (which should be in the European Format). If you can prove you're worthy, you will be compensated on many levels; a collaborator’s contract with a public school, an hourly wage of (up to) 80 euros, lots of contacts, and the opportunity to change students' lives.

And there is a true DEMAND for native-speaking EFL teachers; so much that some schools had to postpone or cancel their projects because they could find no qualified candidates. Unfortunately, when the government is finally ready to organize funds for quality education, there is nobody to fulfill the task.

If you are an EU citizen and interested in teaching English in Italian public schools, don't miss this opportunity. Actually, you should consider it even if you aren't an EU citizen - as long as you are willing to go through some red tape - something of which there will probably be less when the gap between the government's promises and its project's potential becomes evident. If the word isn't getting out to enough qualified EFL teachers, there is most likely a reason.

For many Italians, it is first and foremost every Italian’s right to work in Italy. But, in this case, young Italians deserve the chance to learn English in a way that will make them internationally viable tomorrow. In short, these children need an "out" more than the generation before them needs an "in".

And that's why it is important for you to do your part. If you have a relevant TEFL certification and some EFL teaching experience, start doing some research to discover how you can contribute. Fulfilling your dream of teaching English in Italy will help Italian students fulfill their own. Don't procrastinate: European funding will run out on these projects in 2013.

Hi, Alison

You're in a PON region- if you are interested in a public school contract, you will need to search for these jobs by contacting each school and asking if/when they will publish this year's job announcements. Good luck
